How to get to Åland?
Åland is easily accessible from both Sweden and Finland. Here are the best ways to travel:
✈️ By Air
Mariehamn Airport (MHQ) - The main airport on Åland
- Direct flights from Stockholm (Arlanda)
- Direct flights from Helsinki
- Flight time: 45-60 minutes
- Multiple daily departures
🚢 By Ferry
From Sweden:
- Grisslehamn - Eckerö: 2 hours, multiple daily departures
- Kapellskär - Mariehamn: 2.5 hours, daily departures
- Stockholm - Mariehamn: Overnight ferry, daily departures
- Ålandstrafiken: Local ferries between the islands
Ålandstrafiken operates the Osnäs–Hummelvik and Galtby–Långnäs routes.
Please note that, as a rule, you cannot book the entire journey without an overnight stay on one of the islands.
From Finland:
- Turku - Mariehamn: 5 hours, daily departures
- Naantali - Långnäs: 2 hours, multiple daily departures
- Helsinki - Mariehamn: Overnight ferry, daily departures

Traveling with a dog
If you are traveling with a dog, you must ensure the following requirements are met:
- Identification: The dog must be microchipped.
- Rabies vaccination: The dog must have a valid rabies vaccination, administered after the microchipping.
- Deworming (tapeworm): The dog must be treated for echinococcosis (tapeworm) by a veterinarian 24–120 hours before arrival in Åland/Finland.
- EU pet passport: An official pet passport containing records of the microchip, vaccination, and deworming, entered by a veterinarian.
Bringing your dog on the ferry is usually no problem. However, please note that you must stay in designated pet-friendly areas.
